A Phenomenological Study on the Change of Self That People Having Mental Disability Experience in Photo-therapy Programme

Abstract
This Study aims on understanding the experiences of participants having mental disability with phenomenological method. It examines what are the directions which new programmes for people having mental disability as an alternative to existing ones. The participants of this study are all thirteen who used a psycho-social rehabilitation service center located in G city. The study had been performed from Jun to December 2013 through the individual in-depth-interviews as well as personal-documentsanalysis. The narrations that the participants had stated and documents were analysed into 168 meaningful statements and these statements have arranged into 16 sub-constituents and 5 final themes. The final 5 themes are ¡°Accepting photograph¡±, ¡°Developing sensitivity¡±, ¡°Looking into the self¡±, ¡°Living as ¡®I¡¯ in the world¡±, ¡°Strengthening the power¡±. The essentiality penetrating all the experiences was drawn to the key theme of ¡°the process of looking into myself and of becoming ¡®I¡¯¡±. This means that participants are struggling to accept themselves as they are and to find real ¡®I¡¯. On these empirical analysis, it was insisted as a part of conclusion that people having mental disability have the ability to change themselves therefore their families and professionals need to acknowledge their power as an active agent to control their subjectivity, and that it is necessary for new programmes with various methodologies are to be developed.
